District of Columbia update
A Legislative Agenda in DC
The District of Columbia has a legislative agenda to end mandatory commitment in their district. The Community of Practice team has been meeting to help support families in the process of this legislation. They have partnered with the Georgetown Law Center’s Community Justice Project, which is a social justice systems change clinic. They are working with students and supervisors on the issue of commitment, and have put together a video and PowerPoint for families on what it takes to do good testimony, with real life examples from families.
Building a Parent-to-Parent Network
Another main focus in DC is creating a statewide parent to parent network. Parent to Parent programs offer parent to parent support as a core resource for families with children who have a special health care need, disability, or mental health issue. They have worked closely with Parent to Parent USA (P2P-USA), the national organization to start building a chapter in their state. The Community of Practice team has made lots of connections with agencies and organizations to partner in creating, growing, and sustaining the chapter.
